Additional Information
Two letters (in one ciphertext) by Rijckloff van Goens as official of the United East India Company (VOC) to the governing collective in Amsterdam, the so-called Heeren XVII. This letter is remarkable, not only because of its length, but also because of the fact that graphic signs are used for cipher symbols. There are no other other examples from the Dutch Republic, to my knowledge.
Van Goens sent his personal secretary Leeuwenson, together with a company soldier, overland from Ceylon to Amsterdam. A journey that took him almost 1 year. Leeuwenson is also the one who encrypted these two letters.
In paper 'Island Ramanacoil a Bridge too Far. A Dutch Ciphertext from 1674', https://ecp.ep.liu.se/index.php/histocrypt/article/view/156/112 this ciphertext is discussed.
